Bible Verses for Ascension

“Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.”

— Psalms 68:18

The Ascension is the Bible's transition scene — the blessing hands still lifted, the cloud, the two men in white asking why the disciples are staring. Luke records it twice (Gospel and Acts), and the epistles explain what it means: a priest in the true sanctuary and a throne with a human on it.

Quick answer: The most-read verse for ascension is Psalms 68:18: "Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them." Daniel 7:13 is the traditional second reading: "I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him." When to read these verses

These verses are read in the season itself — in services, around tables, in cards, and aloud at the gatherings the date calls for. Ascension Day is 39 days after Easter (a Thursday); the date moves each year and is computed below. The list also gets read in preparation: the weeks before, when the readings are chosen and the family texts are picked. 15 verses is deliberate: long enough to cover the occasion's full range, short enough to read through once.

How to use these verses

Copy any verse from its card for a program, a card, a caption, or a reading — every text here is public domain in both translations shown, so no permission is needed for print or projection. Each card toggles between the King James Version and the World English Bible; check the modern rendering before reading aloud if the archaic grammar might get between the listeners and the meaning. For the themes behind the season, the related topic pages below carry the fuller lists.
