Bible Verses About Peace

Peace in the Bible is less a feeling than a state of affairs — a settled relationship where there was hostility, and a settled mind where there was noise. Jesus says it plainly in John 14:27: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth." The world's peace tends to be conditional on circumstances; the version on offer here is given the night before an arrest. Isaiah 26:3 states the mechanism — "thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee" — and Psalm 4:8 turns it into a bedtime practice. Fifteen verses follow, in full KJV text, for nights that will not quiet down and days that start too loud.

Quick answer: John 14:27 is the central verse: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." Isaiah 26:3 links peace to a mind stayed on God; Philippians 4:7 describes peace that "passeth all understanding" guarding heart and mind; and Psalm 4:8 makes it practical: "I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep."

When to read these verses

These verses are read at bedtime (Psalm 4:8), before difficult conversations (Colossians 3:15), in anxious seasons (Philippians 4:6-7), and in conflict (Matthew 5:9: "Blessed are the peacemakers"). The Bible does not treat peace as the absence of problems — John 16:33 says "in the world ye shall have tribulation" in the same breath as "that in me ye might have peace." Read the list when your mind is loud; the verses are short and specifically aimed at that condition.

How to use this list

Use the copy button to keep a verse where it will actually interrupt the noise — a lock screen works well for Psalm 4:8 or Isaiah 26:3. Each card switches between the King James Version and the World English Bible for modern wording; "my peace I give unto you" reads the same in both, but the surrounding verses shift meaningfully ("stayed on thee" becomes "whose mind is steadfast"). If you want verses drawn one at a time, the random verse tool at the top of this page can filter by the peace theme.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Bible verse for peace of mind?
Philippians 4:6-7 describes the exchange — prayer with thanksgiving followed by "the peace of God, which passeth all understanding" — which shall "keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Isaiah 26:3 states the principle directly: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." Both connect peace of mind to what the mind rests on rather than to mental effort.
What does John 14:27 mean?
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." Jesus speaks these words to his disciples the night before his arrest. The contrast is deliberate: the world's peace is conditional on favorable circumstances, while what he gives is distributed in advance of the worst-case scenario.
What verse says "I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep"?
Psalm 4:8: "I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety." It is one of several psalms of the night — Psalm 3:5 and Psalm 121:3-4 also address sleep and safety — and it is commonly used as an evening prayer.
What Bible verses help with conflict?
Matthew 5:9: "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God." Romans 12:18 assigns the effort: "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men." Colossians 3:15 frames peace as the governing rule of a community: "let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body."
